Coming up to the one-year anniversary of Emma’s disappearance, the Fillipoff family put out a $25,000 reward for any information that leads to Emma’s whereabouts. Tips and photos have trickled in, particularly right after the reward was issued. So far, there have been no confirmed sightings. Shelley has also organized fundraising events and crowd-funding campaigns to help to hire a private investigator. Thanks to Perth’s close-knit community, she was able to raise over $20,000 which will go towards the P.I.’s rate of $95 per hour.

Organizing the fundraisers gave Shelley a focus, a purpose. Otherwise, it’s far too easy to sink into despair.

When I met with Shelley, she was “really really stressed” about driving to Victoria to get Emma’s stuff. “I don’t want to go,” she said. “I don’t want to go through her stuff again.” It was Shelley who had emptied Emma’s deserted van into storage, a few months after Emma disappeared. Besides Emma’s laptop, camera and passport, the van held tons of books, journals and sentimental items such as driftwood and rocks.  The plan was to put in Emma’s bedroom in their family home. “Not as a shrine. Just as a place to keep her stuff that’s not the basement.”

The trip to Victoria happened in August and turned out to be very emotional and draining.

Shelly:  "I thought having her things close to me, in the next room, would provide a level of comfort but actually has made me very, very sad. I look upon them as what "remains" of Emma and that word has a horrible connotation. I have not gone through the boxes nor do I think I will...not sure why...I did go through the trunk to find her now 'famous' jeans ones she had made herself, all patch work and beads… They now hang in a closet. Safe until she returns."

End of Part Eight.
